Château Pontet-Canet

185.00

Wine Advocate-Parker : 92 Ponts
Tasted at the Pontet-Canet vertical, the 2000 Château Pontet-Canet is perhaps where things start getting interesting, as Alfred Tesseron’s top-to-toe reconfiguration of the vineyard and vinification began to impact and ameliorate the wine. It has a lovely bouquet of blackberry and briary fruit, hints of black truffle developing, later damp earth. There is an intensity here, if not the complexity of the best millennial Pauillacs. The palate is medium-bodied with a mixture of red and black fruit, cedar and sous-bois percolating up through and rendering it a serious Pontet-Canet in keeping with the vintage. There is a subtle and yet insistent grip on the finish. It has always been a tannic wine, but these are now softening, albeit at a slower pace than some might like.

Tasting Notes: A red wine from Pauillac with an incredibly long finish
Château Pontet-Canet is a red wine produced in the Pauillac appellation. The vineyard of this 5ème cru classé covers a total area of 81 hectares. The vines, which are an average of 40 to 45 years old, are planted on gravelly Quaternary soils. The wine is aged for 16 months in oak barrels (60% of which are new).

Displaying a very intense red colour, the Château Pontet-Canet 2000 reveals a powerful nose, beautifully balanced between fruit (blackberry, raspberry) and the wood of its barrel-ageing (licorice, toasted notes). The attack on the palate shows great amplitude and sweetness. This long wine is endowed with an incredible structure, offering very soft tannins. The finish is anything but aggressive and reveals superb length.
